Place and Need
The median at Richmond Highway and Gunston Road occupies a highly visible community gateway. Its condition created an opportunity for a focused cleanup and beautification project that could restore visual order and produce an immediate, visible improvement.
Project Origin
Beautify Lorton grew from a January 2026 conversation about creating a cleaner, more welcoming Lorton. Project 001 turned that idea into action on April 12, 2026 and became the organization’s first volunteer-led improvement project.
Partners and Permissions
The project was assisted by the office of Fairfax County Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck. Clean Fairfax provided cleanup supplies, and the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services authorized disposal of collected material at the Fairfax landfill.
Planning and Materials
Beautify Lorton organized the workday around cleaning and refreshing the median and planting native greenery. Clean Fairfax provided supplies needed for the community cleanup. The available record does not yet itemize individual tools, plants, or material quantities.
Volunteer Action
Eight volunteers participated in the April 12 workday. Their safe, organized effort demonstrated that a committed group of neighbors could complete a practical improvement at a prominent shared location.
Before, During and After
Project 001 is documented by before, during, and after photographs and an MP4 workday video. The video is credited to Casey Rizer. Together, these materials record the original condition, volunteer activity, and completed result.
Immediate Results
The median was cleaned, refreshed, planted, and visibly improved. The completed work transformed the appearance of a highly visible gateway and gave Beautify Lorton an early result that residents could readily see.
Continuing Care
Beautify Lorton continues to monitor the median. John Rand and Tim Rizer have provided follow-up care by treating invasive weeds at the site.
Transferable Lessons
Project 001 showed the value of choosing a visible and achievable need, coordinating permissions and supplies before the workday, organizing volunteers for safe action, documenting progress, and following the site after completion.
Community Participation
Residents can support future Beautify Lorton workdays by volunteering or suggesting cleanup and beautification locations. Operational supply-request information is maintained privately for authorized project organizers.
